Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 3

In an interview with Den of Geek, Matalas revealed that Star Trek: Picard will also tie into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Before his interview, it was well known that season 3 was going to be a Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion that would see the original USS Enterprise gang together again. However, Matalas has now revealed that the season will dive even deeper into Star Trek history by connecting it to several major Star Trek: Deep Space Nine events. Check out Matalas' quote below:

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is finally getting its overdue resurgence, thanks to the upcoming third season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks." "Deep Space Nine" was the fourth entry in the "Star Trek" TV franchise, debuting in 1993 while the much-loved series "The Next Generation" was still on the air and before "Voyager" hit TV screens. "Deep Space Nine" shook-up the formula: Rather than following a Federation starship crew, the series focused on a former Cardassian station in deep-space that recently became Federation-controlled, and just so happens to be near a wormhole to the unexplored Gamma Quadrant. While "TNG" has been getting a pop-culture comeback thanks to "Star Trek: Picard" (arguably, it never really left), "DS9" has largely felt forgotten, with many Trekkers to this day feeling frustrated that it never received a proper remastered edition.

As is common with Star Trek, it took a bit for the series to find its footing. The relationships between the crew members is still developing in season 1 and the larger storylines have yet to emerge. Still, this is where you should start to learn about the setting and characters. Basically, Commander (later Captain) Sisko is given command of Deep Space Nine after the Cardassian empire finally ends it occupation of Bajor. He discovers a stable wormhole to the distant Gamma Quadrant, which puts Bajor on the proverbial map. It also makes him a religious icon for the Bajoran people. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas previously expressed his excitement at reuniting the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew. "I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science fiction," Matalas said in a press release. "So, it's most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can't wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!"

But that was just the start. The Dominion decided to conquer the Alpha Quadrant, and had their Changeling agents infiltrate the ranks of Starfleet, the Klingon Empire, and others. They infiltrated Federation starships and sabotaged them, and manipulated the powers of the Alpha Quadrant against each other, causing a brief war between the Klingons and the Federation after decades of peace. Eventually, the Dominion waged a full-scale war against the Federation. Starfleet had to unite with their enemies the Klingons and even the Romulans to save the galaxy. Meanwhile, the Dominion and the Cardassians, longtime Federation enemies, forged an alliance. This prolonged conflict they named The Dominion War, and covered seasons five to seven of DS9.

Ranking the best Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes is no easy task considering there were 176 of them spread over seven seasons. Premiering in 1993 and ending in 1999, Deep Space Nine (DS9) warped into new territory for Trek. Set mostly on a space station rather than a starship, DS9 was grittier than The Next Generation (TNG) and more grounded than Voyager. We saw the first black lead in the commanding presence of Avery Brooks, and delved deeper into the affairs of the Bajorans, Cardassians, and Ferengi.
